Entering the third week of war, Israeli authorities are beginning to calculate the losses that the clash with Palestinians could bring to the country.
According to local government sources, of the approximately 360,000 called up from the military reserves to present themselves and fight in the war, the vast majority are young people between 25 and 30 years old.
There is also a fear that, by increasing the number of military personnel present in the war, Israel will empty out the country’s startups and other technology companies. There are around 6 thousand companies in the sector based in the region, especially Tel Aviv.
“The impact of this will depend on the duration of the war, on how long these young people will be away from work”, says Cila Schulman, director of the Brazil-Israel Chamber of Commerce. Initial calculations show that between 10% and 15% of technology company employees have already been called up to serve in the war.
According to the Brazil-Israel Chamber of Commerce, large technology companies that have offices in Israel may also have their operations impacted if the conflicts continue.
Google, for example, employs around 2,200 people in Tel Aviv and Haifa while Microsoft has around 2,000 employees in Tel Aviv, most of whom work in research and digital security.
