ASEAN: Taiwan situation may spark ‘open conflict’

The situation in Taiwan could lead to “open conflict”, Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) foreign ministers meeting in Phnom Penh warned today, expressing “concern” about large-scale military exercises announced to be held around from the island the army of China.

“ASEAN is concerned about international and regional instability, especially the recent developments in the region (…) which may lead to miscalculations, serious conflict, open conflicts with unpredictable consequences for the major powers,” the leaders stressed of the League’s diplomacy in the joint announcement they made public.

Cambodia, the country that currently holds the rotating presidency of ASEAN, called on all parties to opt for a de-escalation of tensions.
