Asia and Pacific stocks: Tokyo and Sydney close higher after gains in NY

Stocks in Asia and the Pacific closed higher on Tuesday, the 1st, after another round of gains on Wall Street.

In Tokyo, Japan’s Nikkei index rose 0.28% to 27,078.48 points, supported by electronics stocks.

Other Asian equity markets, such as those in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea, did not trade today due to the Lunar New Year holidays.

In Oceania, the Australian stock market was boosted by technology and financial stocks. The S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.49% in Sydney at 7,006.00 points.

This morning, the Central Bank of Australia (RBA) kept its basic interest rate at 0.10%, but decided to end its government bond purchase program.

The positive tone in the Asia-Pacific region came after New York stocks closed robustly higher for a second straight session yesterday, reducing the losses that Wall Street racked up throughout January amid concerns over the prospect of interest rate hikes in USA.
