Asian stocks close lower as US inflation raises interest rate fears

Asian stock markets closed lower on Wednesday (15), after US inflation data reinforced expectations that the Federal Reserve (Fed, the US central bank) will continue to raise interest rates to contain price advances.

The Japanese Nikkei index fell 0.37% in Tokyo, to 27,501.86 points, while the Hang Seng retreated 1.43% in Hong Kong, to 20,812.17 points, the South Korean Kospi lost 1.53% in Seoul, at 2,427.90 points, and Taiex recorded a loss of 1.42% in Taiwan, at 15,432.89 points.

In mainland China, the Shanghai Composite retreated 0.39%, to 3,280.49 points, and the less comprehensive Shenzhen Composite had a low only marginal, of 0.06%, to 2,187.51 points.

The general bad mood in Asia came after annual figures for consumer inflation (CPI) in the US showed a slower-than-expected deceleration, consolidating the view that the Fed will have to continue raising its basic interest rates.

In the wake of the US CPI, New York stock markets closed with no single direction on Tuesday, with losses in the Dow Jones and the S&P 500 and advances in the Nasdaq.

In Oceania, the Australian stock exchange followed the negative tone of the Asian region this Wednesday, and the S&P/ASX 200 fell 1.06% in Sydney, at 7,352.20 points.
