Asian stocks closed lower on Tuesday, as geopolitical tensions intensified over the possible visit of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan.
In mainland China, the Shanghai Composite index was down 2.26% today to 3,186.27 points, while the less comprehensive Shenzhen Composite slipped 2.92% to 2,138.17 points.
Elsewhere in Asia, Japan’s Nikkei dropped 1.42% in Tokyo to 27,594.73 points, while Hang Seng lost 2.36% in Hong Kong to 19,689.21 points, South Korean Kospi dropped 0, 52% in Seoul, at 2,439.62 points, and Taiex was down 1.56% in Taiwan, at 14,747.23 points.
Risk appetite has been dampened by expectations that Pelosi will arrive in Taiwan on Tuesday night (local time), according to the island’s own media, as part of a tour of the Asian region.
China, which considers Taiwan part of its territory, has already issued several warnings about “serious consequences” if the visit does take place.
In Oceania, the Australian stock exchange was practically stable on Tuesday, with a slight increase of 0.07% of the S&P/ASX 200 in Sydney, at 6,998.10.
This morning, the Central Bank of Australia, known as the RBA, raised its basic interest rate by another 0.5 percentage point, to 1.85%.
