ASML spokesman commented on the shortage of chips for automotive electronics

According to the management of the Dutch semiconductor equipment company ASML, the shortage of chips for cars is a sign of increased demand on a wider scale.

“I think everywhere… the demand for our semiconductor customers – I would say there is stress everywhere,” said Ron Kool, executive vice president of ASML.

He said that demand for most computer chips, including less advanced ones, was higher than most industry players expected, including ASML, when the pandemic was just beginning.

According to Kool, this is not a one-time wave of demand, but a transition of the market to a new level.

Over the past decade, ASML has grown to become the largest European industrial technology company. It is estimated at about 200 billion euros. ASML supplies its equipment to semiconductor manufacturers such as Intel, Samsung Electronics and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.

ASML manufactures equipment for lithography in the extreme ultraviolet range or EUV, which is the most advanced technology. However, ASML’s fourth-quarter report shows an exceptionally high volume of orders for the previous generation machines, which still account for the lion’s share of sales.
