Syrian President Bashar al-Assad met today in Dubai with Dubai Governor Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, the Syrian presidency announced.
This is Assad’s first visit to an Arab country since the outbreak of war in Syria in 2011.
The Syrian president also met with the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the United Arab Emirates news agency (WAM) reported. The two leaders discussed various issues of common interest, emphasizing the preservation of Syria’s territorial integrity and the withdrawal of foreign forces. They also discussed the political and humanitarian support of Syria and its people to find a peaceful solution to all the challenges it faces, the agency added.
The meeting is Damascus’ latest diplomatic opening, signaling a shift in the Middle East, where many Arab countries appear to be reviving ties with the Assad regime.
