The cypherpunk community of Julian Assange is raising funds in ETH for the issuance of NFTs to prevent the extradition of the founder of Wikileaks to the United States.
The decentralized autonomous organization AssangeDAO was founded on December 10, 2021, the day the US government won the court case and received the legal opportunity to extradite the founder of Wikileaks to the States. The project website says that AssangeDAO is “a group of cypherpunks fighting for the release of Julian Assange.”
AssangeDAO, building on the experience of FreeRossDAO (which raised $12 million to free Ross Ulbricht), is planning to raise capital to release Censored NFTs, created by digital artist Pak in collaboration with Julian Assange. Proceeds from the NFT sale will be used to pay legal fees and campaign against the extradition of the founder of Wikileaks. The foundation is supported by the Assange family.
The NFT “Censored” collection is due to be auctioned on February 7, 2022. According to JuiceBox, AssangeDAO has already raised 12,683 ETH, roughly $39 million.
This largest fundraising in JuiceBox history. It has already surpassed the November 2021 fundraiser for the purchase of a reprint of the original Constitution of the United States ConstitutionDAO (11,613 ETH).
Julian Assange has been held at Belmarsh Prison in London since 2019. Previously, he hid in the Ecuadorian embassy in London for almost seven years, using refugee status. If extradited to the United States, Assange faces 175 years in prison.
