Ο πHaiti President Jovenel Mois was shot and killed overnight by unknown assailants at his private home. in an “inhumane and barbaric act,” interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph said today.
Moise’s wife was injured and is receiving medical treatment, Joseph said in a statement.
The attack took place as a wave of political violence erupted in this impoverished Caribbean country. As Haiti is politically divided and faces an escalating humanitarian crisis and food shortages, fears of widespread unrest are emerging.
“All measures are being taken to guarantee the continuity of the state and to protect the nation,” Joseph said. Shots were heard throughout the capital.
Port-au-Prince is facing increasing violence as gangs clash with each other and with police patrolling the streets.
This violence has been fueled by rising poverty and political instability. Moise had faced strong protests since taking office in 2017, with the opposition accusing him this year of seeking to establish a dictatorship that goes beyond his term and increase authoritarianism – accusations he has denied.
