Assassination of the President of Haiti: New arrests and a battle with gunmen

New arrests for assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Mois carried out by the country’s security forces, according to the plans that broadcast, live, many local media.

Police and soldiers had surrounded the militants since Wednesday and a fierce battle was taking place, local officials said, according to APE-MPE.

The atmosphere on the streets of Port-au-Prince today was tense. Shops, banks, gas stations and other small shops did not open their shutters. The capital’s international airport remains closed, as does the border with neighboring Dominican Republic.

So far there is no information on the identity and motives of the gunmen who ransacked President Moise inside his house on Tuesday night through Wednesday. The government declared a two-week national mourning period.

Earlier, police say they killed four “mercenaries”, allegedly members of this group.

Residents, stunned by the developments, are still trying to understand how the tragedy happened. “Where did the armored police officers who monitor the president day and night go? Why didn’t they react? ” asked Julia, a 28-year-old lawyer.

Outside a Pessonville police station on the outskirts of the capital, residents gathered and cheered on police for arresting the perpetrators, demanding that they be handed over to the crowd to be lynched.

The perpetrators were “professionals” posing as agents of the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Haitian ambassador to Washington revealed on Wednesday.
