Assisted suicide, Mario is dead: “Life is fantastic, I wrote history”

Tetraplegic for about 10 years due to a car accident the 44-year-old from Senigallia had thought of going to Switzerland to die in August 2020, but instead embarked on the path of medically assisted suicide with the Luca Coscioni Association.

In Italy he is the first to have obtained it through the Constitutional Court judgment 242/2019 on the Cappato-Antoniani case. To have the medical examinations it took 13 months: they were used to establish if he had the requisites to access medically assisted suicide. His true identity was made known after his death. It was his will. Federico died in his house afterwards self-administered the lethal drug. The medically assisted suicide procedure took place under the medical supervision of Dr. Mario Riccio, Piergiorgio Welby’s anesthetist and Federico Carboni’s consultant during the judicial proceedings. Alongside Federico, his family, his friends, as well as Marco Cappato, Filomena Gallo and a part of the legal college.

His last words: «I do not deny that I am sorry to take leave of life, I would be false and a liar if I said the opposite because life is fantastic and we only have one. But unfortunately it went like this. I have done everything possible to be able to live as well as possible and try to recover the maximum from my disability, but by now I am both mentally and physically exhausted. I do not have a minimum of autonomy in daily life, I am at the mercy of events, I depend on others for everything, I am like a boat adrift in the ocean. I am aware of my physical condition and future prospects so I am totally calm and calm about what I will do. With the Luca Coscioni Association we defended ourselves by attacking and we attacked by defending ourselves, we did jurisprudence and a piece of history in our country and I am proud and honored to have been by your side.
