Association of victims of Nightclub Kiss disagrees with the lawsuit and says it is represented in a Netflix series

The Association of Relatives of Victims and Survivors of the Tragédia de Santa Maria (AVTSM) stated that it does not agree with the group of relatives of victims of the fire at Kiss nightclub that intends to sue Netflix for the series “Todo Dia a Mesma Noite”.

This Sunday (29), lawyer Juliane Muller Korbm reported to CNN that a group of about 40 families hired her to represent them in a case against the streaming platform due to what they call the “commercial exploitation of the tragedy”.

In a statement released by Instagram, the president of AVTSM, Gabriel Rovadoschi Barros, clarified that the association was aware of the production and “feels represented” both by the series and by the homonymous book on which it was based, by journalist Daniela Arbex.

“The production does not portray the 242 murdered youths individually, but a cut of the four families of parents who were prosecuted. All family members of victims and survivors portrayed by characters in the work were aware and in agreement,” says the note.

AVTSM reported that it is not filing any lawsuit against the productions and there is no such claim, “since we believe in the power of productions in the fight for justice and the fight for memory”.

We believe, above all, that tragedies like the one we experienced need to be told through all forms. Retelling this story means denouncing the countless negligence and silencing attempts we encountered along the way, as well as helping to prevent this type of tragedy from happening to any other family, something we have had as our purpose since the 1st day of our foundation. Showing what happened at Kiss means that the deaths of our sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, fathers and mothers, friends and friends were not in vain. Showing the slowness, bureaucracy and what the Brazilian judicial system is like serves as a denunciation and as a protest. It is necessary to talk, debate, produce materials about what happened on that tragic night of January 27, 2013, because only then will we get people to understand what greed, negligence and omission are capable of doing. In Santa Maria, these factors killed 242 young people and left 636 with physical and psychological scars.

The president of the association also clarified that there is no financial transfer from Netflix to AVTSM on account of the production: “What we gain is the belief in strengthening the fight for justice and memory. So that it doesn’t happen again.”

THE CNN sought out Netflix advice for comment on the case, but there was no response.
