Association projects generation of more than 700 thousand temporary jobs in the 1st quarter

Brazil is expected to generate more than 700,000 temporary jobs in work in the first quarter of 2022, according to estimates by the Brazilian Association of Temporary Work (Asserttem) released this Wednesday (16).

The modality of temporary hiring has been provided for in law for almost 40 years, but has undergone updates and increased legal certainty, with the most recent measure being Decree 10,854, published in November 2021.

The association states that temporary hires should be driven by the period of Easter, with the chocolate industry already heated up since December. It is expected to generate around 14,000 jobs.

The projection also considers the effects of a slowdown in inflation and the continuation of the trend of dollar retreat, started in January 2022. Even so, Asserttem claims to be “cautious” with the projections, as there is an expectation of a drop in vacancies in the industry in February and March.

“Furthermore, it is still difficult to find labor in small Brazilian municipalities, making temporary hires difficult”, says the association’s president, Marcos de Abreu.

Asserttem also highlighted the “surprising” result in January, with the generation of 202,220 temporary jobs, a growth of 13.2% compared to January 2021 and the highest number in the historical series, which began in 2014.

According to the association, the sector that stood out in hiring was services, responsible for 35% of the vacancies. He stayed behind industryresponsible for 55% of the vacancies, but ahead of the businesswith 10%.

“We expected a reduction in hiring due to the pandemic and inflation. But none of these factors were enough to hold the temporary hires in the month of January”, says Abreu.

He claims that weather factors brought the soybean harvest earlier, which resulted in more hiring in the food industry. An improvement in the reception of imported components from China also allowed an increase in industrial production.

The association’s assessment is that companies have used temporary work to “stay strong in the market and meet their demands”, without the “high costs” of contracts CLT. In the temporary modality, the company pays the worker’s salary and social security.

“Brazil opened 2.7 million formal jobs in 2021, according to data from Caged. Of these, around 594,000 went through the temporary work modality before being hired”, says the president.
