“Companies that fail to meet their commitments shouldn’t be excused.” Mario Draghi had announced the hard line in the first meeting with European leaders and he intends to follow it. The first move has already made. The Italian premier was the first to block, with the green light of the European Union, the export of 250,000 AstraZeneca vaccines to Australia, packaged in the Anagni plant.
The Australian response was immediate with the Minister of Finance, Simon Birmingham: «This is a demonstration of how well Australia continues to do compared to the desperation of other countries.
The world is currently in uncharted territory. It is not surprising that some countries do not respect the rules».
Italy is the first country to have stopped an expedition after the European Commission created it at the end of January the notification and authorization mechanism for the export of anti-Covid vaccines. This stance had come from Europe after AstraZeneca had communicated a 60% cut in doses destined for the EU in the first quarter of 2021 (now reduced to 25%), when instead there were no cuts for others, for example the UK.
The Italian government notified the application of the mechanism in Brussels and blocked direct supplies to a country considered “not vulnerable”, Australia which is not in an emergency. The entire EU, on the other hand, has a shortage of vaccines and high numbers of infections. This supply was blocked because it was particularly high in numbers compared to what is lacking in Europe.
Meanwhile, the European Medicines Agency is evaluating a new vaccine: the Russian Sputnik V. He said he will evaluate “the data as it becomes available to decide whether the benefits outweigh the risks.” Johnson & Johnson should be given the green light next week. The others available are Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca which yesterday Germany authorized its use also on over 65s and Italy is evaluating the same.
