Asus has quietly corrected the specifications of the cable that comes with the ROG Thor II PSU

The source made a “discovery” explaining the difference between the 12-pin cable that some video cards and power supplies are designed for, and the 16-pin additional power cable described in the PCIe Gen5 standard.

The 16-pin cable fully complies with the PCI-SIG 12VHPWR High Power Connector (H+) standard, which defines a new high power connector for next generation graphics cards. It delivers up to 600W, while the 12-pin only delivers 450W.

Asus, which originally credited its 1000W ROG Thor II PSU with the ability to deliver 600W of power over a 12-pin cable, is said to have quietly changed the description on the site. The cable that comes with the ROG Thor II PSU now says it’s rated for 450W.

The upcoming NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti flagship card is rumored to have a TDP of 450W. It is also expected that this card will be the first with a 16-pin connector. With only 450 watts of power available, one wonders if a Thor II series PSU would be enough to power this card.

The 1000W PSU should be available this month for $360. The 1200W and 1600W options should be available by the end of the first quarter, and the 850W options in the second quarter.
