At 51,000 the dead in Turkey and Syria from the earthquake

The dead amount to 51,000 Turkey and Syria after the devastating earthquake that occurred on February 6. In Turkey alone, the victims amount to 45,089, the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD) announced.

The first 7.8 magnitude earthquake was followed by more than 11,000 aftershocks, several of which were very strong.

The injured in Turkey have exceeded 108,000 and millions of people have been left homeless, as more than 160,000 buildings (with 520,000 apartments) collapsed or were seriously damaged.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has pledged to rebuild the damaged houses within a year, but it will be many months before people who have lost their homes can leave the tents or shipping containers they are now living in, Reuters reports.

For those affected more than 350,000 tents have been set up in 332 locations, while container camps have been created in 162 places. About two million people have fled the affected areas.
