“No one wants to be defined by their age. When you’re 30, you don’t want to be told, ‘You’re 30, you should start worrying.’ And when you’re 60, you don’t want to be told, ‘Don’t you think we should end things already?’ It seems like a very limited way of defining someone, when, in fact, everyone is just living the experience of being alive”, she said in an interview with The Observer magazine, from the British newspaper The Guardian.
The Oscar winner, who is married to director Bart Freundlich and shares children Caleb, 26, and Liv, 22, with him, believes questions about age may seem job-related, but the deeper issue behind it is mortality.
“We all have a life cycle. Sometimes the questions about age are really business related, you know, but then the deeper question… and here we are going back to the dark part of this interview, the deeper question is about mortality.”
The actress also recently explained that her relationship with work has changed, as she no longer needs to be so present for her children.
“When my kids were little or in high school, I just didn’t accept certain roles. Everything I did had to be in New York, or I could travel for a short time, or only in the summer”, he recalled.
“I really, really prioritized having a family. I wanted my children to feel rooted somewhere. I wanted to experience being part of a family, and that meant making certain work choices that allowed me to do that. Now the situation is very different, I can just go”, he continued. “But it is still a challenge. You’re thinking, ‘Wait, wait, where is my life?’”
