At 94 years old, José Caruzzo Escafura, known as Piruinha, a bookkeeper from the old Rio de Janeiro dome, goes to the popular jury for qualified homicide, in Rio de Janeiro. The hearing is scheduled for early afternoon this Tuesday (9) and the offender participates via videoconference for health reasons.
He has been under house arrest since last year, when he was hospitalized after suffering a fractured femur after falling in the prison bathroom.
Piruinha was arrested in 2022, accused of the death of car dealer Natalino José do Nascimento Espínola, Neto, in July 2021. The victim was shot in an ambush, while he was heading on foot to the vehicle store he had on Estrada Intendente Magalhães, in the north of Rio.
According to the Public Ministry of the State of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ), the bicheiro and the military police officer Jeckson Lima Pereira, known as Jeck, were involved in the crime, as well as Piruinha's daughter, Monalliza Neves Escafura. Investigations indicate that Jeck, who was Piruinha's personal security guard, fired shots that caused Neto's death, because the victim had not paid a cash debt to the offender.
Who is Piruinha?
The oldest living member of the former game dome in Rio de Janeiro, Piruinha has, for decades, dominated the note-taking points in various regions of the city, especially in the neighborhoods of Madureira, Abolição, Cascadura, Maria da Graça , Piedade and Inhaúma, among others.
The bicheiro also leases other areas for gambling exploration to other criminals, including the borders with the neighborhoods of Cascadura, Piedade, Pilares, Abolição, Quintino, Campinho and the border with Praça Seca.
