At least 10 people were injured Monday afternoon (30) in a shooting in Lakeland, Florida, United States, police said. Two are in critical condition.
A four-door dark blue Nissan sedan was at the scene of the shooting, Lakeland Police Department Chief Sam Taylor said.
“The vehicle slowed down, did not stop and all four windows rolled down. It appeared to be occupied by four shooters. They started shooting from all four windows of the vehicle at men on both sides.”
Eight of the victims have non-fatal injuries. Three victims were transported by the emergency services, and were between 20 and 35 years old. The others were taken in personal vehicles, still according to the authorities.
Police believe it was a targeted event, the chief added.
The Nissan, which had temporary plates, left at high speed and police are “actively looking for that vehicle now”.
“We’ll be out most of the night trying to figure out who these individuals are in the vehicle,” Taylor said.
Police are looking for at least four men who may be wearing face coverings, according to the officer. He asked community members to call with any information that might help the investigation.
An unspecified amount of marijuana was found at the scene, which indicates to police that “there was a narcotics sale or marijuana sale going on at that time. Whether this is significant or related to this remains to be seen,” Taylor said.
The chief further noted that in his 34 years at the department he had never worked on a case where so many people had been shot at the same time.
“That’s something that doesn’t happen in Lakeland,” he said.
