On Friday night (2), Chilean government authorities confirmed the deaths of people amid the emergency situation caused by forest fires in the Valparaíso region.
The regional presidential delegate of Valparaíso, Sofía González, explained that “according to the information provided by the police, there are preliminary data on the deaths of around 10 people.”
González emphasized that “we are in the middle of fighting an active fire, with crews working hard.”
Furthermore, he appealed to the population to “cooperate by avoiding driving to evacuation zones, as this makes it difficult to send emergency teams efficiently”.
Due to the severity of the forest fires in the Fifth Region, and to “have all the necessary resources”, President Gabriel Boric declared a state of emergency. He also said that “the situation with forest fires, especially in the 5th region, is very difficult due to temperatures and winds”.
According to preliminary information, at least 7 thousand hectares were consumed by the flames.
