At least 11 people died and 21 are missing after Hurricane Agatha in Oaxaca

The governor of the Mexican state of Oaxaca, Alejandro Murat, said Tuesday in a local media that at least 11 people had died and another 21 remain missing after Hurricane Agatha passed through the state on Monday (30).

Murat indicated that most of the missing people are in the high mountain areas.

The governor explained that the tragedy occurred due to overflowing rivers and landslides.

Previously, the Oaxaca state government reported several people missing in a statement.

The authorities indicated that, of the missing persons, four are due to possible spillages from the overflow of the Copalita River; two are due to a possible landslide in Santa Catarina Xanaguía, belonging to the municipality of San Juan Ozolotepec; one due to a landslide in San Mateo Piñas; and one in San Carlos Yautepec due to possible river drag in the city of Asunción Tlacolulita.

“Civil Protection, Public Security and National Guard elements participate in these assistance and rescue work. The arrival of the Attorney General of the State of Oaxaca is expected. Health brigades are also traveling to serve the population of Santa Catarina Xanaguía and San Mateo Piñas,” the statement added.

The governor of Oaxaca said power was restored to Huatulco and other parts of the state.

This Tuesday (1), President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that the Agatha crossing is losing strength and that “so far we have not had major losses”.

It is unknown whether the Cepco report was released before or after the president’s remarks.
