At least 14 killed in Mexico prison attack

Mexican authorities said on Sunday that at least 14 people died in an armed attack on a prison in the northern border city of Juarez, and two more died during a later “armed aggression” in other parts of the municipality.

The Chihuahua state attorney said in a statement that among those killed in the attack were 10 security guards and four inmates, while another 13 were wounded and at least 24 prisoners escaped.

It was not immediately clear who carried out the action. A relative of a prisoner who did not want to be identified reported that all the attackers were in black and better armed than the police.

The prosecutor noted that initial investigations found that the suspects arrived at around 7am local time at the prison in armored vehicles and opened fire.

Minutes earlier, authorities had reported an attack nearby on municipal police. After pursuit, four men were captured and a truck was seized.

Elsewhere in the city, two more drivers were killed later in the day, after what authorities called an armed assault.

The state attorney did not specify whether the three incidents were related.

In August, hundreds of Mexican soldiers were sent to Juarez after a prison clash between members of two rival cartels sparked a riot and gunfights that killed 11 people, most of them civilians.
