At least 16 dead in shopping mall fire in China

A fire that broke out in a high-rise shopping mall in southwest China on Wednesday killed at least sixteen people, according to the latest casualty count carried today by the official Xinhua news agency. The fire broke out, officially from an as yet unknown cause, last night (local time) in Qigong, a city of about 2.5 million inhabitants in Sichuan Province, 1,600 kilometers from the capital Beijing. Search and rescue and firefighting operations ended at around 03:00 today (local time; yesterday at 22:00 Greek time), New China reported, citing local emergency officials. About thirty people were rescued and taken away by ambulances, state broadcaster CCTV said.
