At least 20 people were killed in fresh incidents of violence in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka today, amid a political crisis facing the country and the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today. Earlier today, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and drove out of the prime minister’s office, boarding a military helicopter to fly her to India. CNN-News18 reported that the former prime minister landed a short while ago in the northeastern Indian city of Agartala. Thousands of protesters stormed the prime minister’s residence in Dhaka, a police officer told AFP. “We have received 20 bodies,” said Basu Mia, a police inspector at the Dhaka Medical Hospital, without elaborating. Bangladesh army chief General Walker-Uz-Saman announced in a televised address that he would “form an interim government” after Hasina’s resignation.
