At least 32 dead and dozens injured in two similar traffic accidents in southeastern Turkey

LAST UPDATE: 22.57

Thirty-two people were killed in two fatal road accidents in southeastern Turkey today when a bus and a truck ran over rescuers who had gone to the sites of earlier accidents.

Sixteen people, including firefighters and journalists, were killed in Gaziantep when a bus plowed into firefighters and journalists on a road east of the city, Governor Davut Gul said. Another 20 people were injured. “Around 10.45 this morning, a bus overturned here,” said Gul, who went to the scene. “While the fire department, medical teams and other rescuers were dealing with the (first) accident, a second bus overturned, 200 meters behind the first. The second bus slid all the way here and hit the rescuers and the injured” from the first accident, explained governor.

About 250 kilometers east of Gaziantep, in the Derik district of Mardin province, an almost identical accident occurred: a truck ran over rescue crews who had rushed to another accident. Sixteen people were killed and another 29 were injured, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said. Eight of the injured are hospitalized in critical condition.
