The collapse of a road bridge two weeks ago in China following torrential rains has killed at least 38 people, while 24 people are still missing. The bridge over a river partially collapsed on July 19 “due to heavy downpour and flash flooding” in Sangluo city in northern Shaanxi province, the official Xinhua news agency reported at the time. Sanguo is located almost 900 kilometers southwest of Beijing. A section of the collapsed bridge, which had three lanes of traffic, was submerged in the river, while the road appeared to be holding up in the other direction of traffic, according to images from state television CCTV. The last count, on July 20, was at least 12 dead and more than 30 missing. It was revised upwards today, with 38 dead and 24 missing, according to Xinhua. Authorities also confirmed that 25 vehicles were swept away when the bridge collapsed, CCTV said. Source: APE
