At least 516 civilians have been killed in Ukraine since Russia began its invasion on February 24, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said in its latest update on Wednesday.
This is an increase of 42 deaths from the previous update on Monday. Some 908 civilians were also injured, the UN said on Wednesday.
“The majority of recorded civilian casualties were caused by the use of explosive weapons with a wide area of impact, including heavy artillery and multiple-launch rocket systems, missiles and air strikes,” the UN said.
The actual numbers “are considerably higher, in government-controlled territory and especially in recent days, as the receipt of information from some places where intense hostilities took place has been delayed and many reports are still awaiting confirmation,” he added.
The UN said the increase in numbers from the previous one “should not be attributed to the civilian casualties that occurred only on 8 March, as during the day the OHCHR also corroborated the casualties that occurred in the previous days”.
