At least 54 immigrants dead in Yemen: sank the boat that carried them

At least 54 immigrants died off the coast of Yemen after the sinking of the boat that transported them due to adverse meteorological conditions. Earlier, sources from Yemen’s security authorities had announced that there were 27 verified dead by the wreck. The boat, which was carrying 150 people, was heading to the coasts of the Aprian province of Yemen and, according to the Yemeni authorities, many of the immigrants is an Ethiopian nationality. Despite the war raging in Yemen in 2014, waves of immigrants continue to reach the country mainly from Ethiopia. Immigrants cross the strait of Bab al-Madab, which separates Djibouti from Yemen, an important channel for international trade, but also for the migration and trafficking of people. According to the International Immigration Organization (IOM), “tens of thousands of people are trapped in Yemen, while being abused and exploited during their movement.” About 60,900 immigrants arrived in Yemen in 2024, according to IOM.
