At least 56 people have died in Sudan, say Doctors Without Borders

At least 56 people died in El Fasher, capital of the state of North Darfur, in Sudan, between last Friday (10) and Wednesday (15), with the “escalation of deadly fighting”, according to a statement from the Doctors Without Borders (MSF).

At the city's Southern Hospital, 454 victims have arrived since last Friday, of which 56 “succumbed to their injuries,” according to the humanitarian organization. MSF added that “the number of injured and dead is likely much higher, as the fighting remains so intense that many people cannot even reach hospital.”

“North Darfur was a relatively safe haven compared to other parts of Darfur,” MSF added. “Now, there are snipers on the streets, heavy bombings occur and no place in the city is safe

Violence in North Darfur has intensified as the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) encircles El Fasher.

A report from the Humanitarian Research Laboratory at the Yale School of Public Health on Wednesday confirmed “significant damage associated with conflict in the eastern and southeastern neighborhoods of the city of El Fasher between May 10 and 14.” This is consistent with reports that the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) “engaged in expanded and recurrent ground fighting and shelling” in the city, the Yale report added.

UN Deputy Special Representative for Sudan Clementine Nkweta-Salami said “hostilities are escalating” in El Fasher, “putting an entire town in danger.”

The United States punished two RSF commanders on Wednesday for their role in leading the paramilitary group's operations in Darfur.

“The RSF military operation to encircle El Fasher, North Darfur, has put the lives of hundreds of thousands of civilians at risk,” said a US State Department spokesperson.

The civil war in Sudan between the SAF and RSF began in April 2023. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, since the start of the war, more than 8.8 million people have fled their homes and 24 .8 million people need assistance.
