At least 59 people died after a tanker truck carrying gasoline exploded in Haiti. The accident happened in the city of Cape Haitiano, the second largest in the country, in the northern region.
“We have 59 dead so far and dozens in hospitals and health centers in the city. We need urgent care now for the wounded and the medical team is asking for a donation of sangye. We have nearly 50 houses affected by the fire and most of them are expected to be demolished. The city will need a lot of help to get out of this tragedy,” he told CNN the city’s deputy mayor, Patrick Almonor.
Local authorities say rescue efforts are underway and the death toll is likely to rise.
According to Prime Minister Ariel Henry, the accident happened on Monday night (13).
“I learned, with desolation and emotion, the sad news of the explosion, last night, in Cape Haitian, of a tanker truck carrying gasoline and which, according to a partial report, caused around forty deaths, dozens of injuries, as well. as extensive material damage”, posted the prime minister on Twitter.
According to a Haitian Civil Defense spokesman, dozens of wounded with burns are in local hospitals receiving treatment.
Medical authorities are asking the population to collaborate with blood donation.
“On behalf of my Government and the entire Haitian population, I offer my sincere condolences to the victims’ families., as well as to all those who are directly or indirectly affected by this drama”, added Henry.
Former Haitian Prime Minister Claude Joseph also spoke on the social network. “I share the pain and sadness of all people [afetadas]”, he said.
