French rescue services are looking for victims and trying to put out a fire after an explosion caused a residential building in central Marseille to collapse early on Sunday (9), with six injured so far identified.
The cause of the explosion is not yet known. The collapse sparked a fire that complicated rescue efforts, Mayor Benoit Payan said. Two nearby buildings partially collapsed.
“I would like us to prepare for a difficult situation – we could have casualties today,” Payan said, adding that five of the six injured were in hospital in a “relatively urgent” situation.
A video posted on social media showed the officers working behind a cordon on the streets of the French city.
Smoke can be seen enveloping the immediate area behind the cordon, while a building alarm is heard in the background.
Firefighters continued to fight the blaze, and 80 people were evacuated, according to rescue services.
“The fire makes it more difficult to find the victims,” Commander Laurent, from the rescue services in Marseille, told BFMTV.
Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin is expected to attend.
