At least 60 dead as fuel tanker overturns in Nigeria

At least 60 people were killed and others injured today in northern Nigeria, when a tanker truck carrying gasoline overturned. The overturned tanker caused a petrol leak and explosion, according to the country’s Federal Road Safety Service (FRSC). The accident in Niger state followed a similar explosion in Jigawa state in October 2024, resulting in the death of 147 people. It was one of the worst tragedies in Africa’s most populous country. FRSC Niger State Area Commander-in-Charge Kumar Chaquan said most of the victims were impoverished local residents who ran to collect the spilled petrol on the road after the tanker overturned.
