At least 8 dead from the collapse of an apartment building in Cairo

Eight people were killed and three others were injured when a six-story apartment building collapsed in central Cairo today, Egypt’s health ministry said. Health Minister Khalid Abdel Ghaffar said nine ambulances had been sent to the scene and that rescue teams were still “searching through the rubble and looking for injured or dead bodies”. The construction of the building dates back to the 1960s. Since 1993, the relevant authorities had ordered repairs to be made to the building, according to a municipal official in charge of the Wili district, quoted by the state-run newspaper al-Ahram. “Residents appealed against this order, which was not carried out,” he said. For precautionary reasons, the neighboring buildings of the six-story apartment building that collapsed today were evacuated, Cairo authorities said.
