At least eight people were trampled to death and others injured when fans took to the stage during the opening night of the Astroworld music festival on Friday (5) in Houston, officials said.
According to authorities, the crowd that had gathered for rapper Travis Scott’s performance began moving toward the front of the stage, causing panic and injuries around 9 pm (local time).
Houston fire chief Samuel Peña confirmed the deaths at an early morning press conference outside NRG Park.
The fire department transported 17 people to hospitals, of whom at least 11 had symptoms of cardiac arrest.
There is still no confirmed information on the causes of the disaster. The second day of the festival, which would take place this Saturday, was canceled by the event’s production.
