At least 98 people arrested in Turkey for alleged looting, theft or fraud after earthquake

At least 98 people were arrested on Saturday (11) by Turkish security forces for alleged looting from damaged buildings, theft or fraud following last week’s devastating earthquake in Turkey, Turkish state news agency Anadolu reported.

According to security sources, who wished to remain anonymous “due to media restrictions”, investigations have been carried out with at least 42 suspects in Hatay province in southern Turkey over allegations of looting of damaged buildings, Anadolu reported.

At least 40 suspects were arrested and security teams seized six weapons, three rifles, jewellery, bank cards, US$11,000 and 70,000 Turkish lira (about R$19,200) in cash, state media reported citing sources. .

Two other people were also arrested after posing as aid workers and allegedly trying to loot six truckloads of food for earthquake victims in Hatay province, the agency said.

At least six people were also arrested in Istanbul for allegedly defrauding an earthquake victim in southern Gaziantep over the phone, Anadolu said.

In other parts of the country, dozens of other suspects were arrested for alleged looting and theft in earthquake-hit areas, Anadolu said.

Suspects were arrested in at least eight provinces, including Kahramanmaras, Hatay, Adiyaman, Malatya, Osmaniye, Adana, Gaziantep and Sanliurfa, it added.
