At least eight people died and seven were hospitalized on Tuesday after a fire broke out at an electric scooter showroom in the southern Indian city of Secunderabad, local police said.
The fire broke out on Monday night in the basement of a hotel that housed an electric scooter showroom, local police said, adding that the fire was under control.
“There were electric scooters parked where the fire started. We don’t know if it started because of excess load and then spread or if it started somewhere else. This is still being established,” Chandana Deepti, the city’s deputy police commissioner, told Reuters.
A detailed investigation into the cause of the fire has begun, she said.
Police and firefighters used cranes and other equipment to rescue people trapped on the hotel’s upper floors, even as smoke billowed from the four-story building’s windows, local media showed.
“Those who stayed on the first and second floors were overwhelmed by the smoke and the maximum casualties are from that floor,” Hyderabad City Police Chief CV Anand told Reuters partner ANI.
