At least five people have died and around 1,000 homes have been destroyed by the powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake that hit northern Papua New Guinea on Sunday, March 24. East Sepik provincial police chief Christopher Tamari said the death toll could be “higher”. The governor of the province, Alan Baird, spoke of “about 1,000 homes lost”, adding that rescue services were still “gauging the effects” of the earthquakes which “caused damage” to almost the entire province.
