At least four people have been killed after a fishing boat sank in New Zealand as heavy storms hit the country today, causing floods mainly in Auckland, officials said.
Four bodies have been recovered from the sea and another man is missing after a shipwreck in the middle of a storm last Sunday night off Northland, in the northern part of the New Zealand archipelago, police said. Five rescued people have been taken to hospital.
The storm then moved south, reaching Auckland this morning, where within an hour 76.8 mm of rain fell. This is the second heaviest rainfall ever recorded in this city, the meteorological service clarified.
Many highways are inaccessible due to floods, schools have closed and many ferry services have been suspended due to bad weather.
Six storms are heading south and are expected to reach the city of Hamilton this afternoon.
The meteorological service has issued a warning, stressing that “rainy weather will continue for most of the week as a low system approaches from the west”.
