At least nine civilians were killed and nine were injured in US attacks in Sanaa, the capital of Yemen, on Saturday (15), according to a spokesman for the country’s Ministry of Health.
Reuters images showed smoke climbing on the scene of an attack, with sounds of prayers heard by the speakers.
Al Masirah TV administered by Houthis reported the attack without providing further details.
The attacks ordered by US President Donald Trump occurred a few days after the Houthis announced plans to resume attacks on Israel’s ships in the Red and Arabic seas, the Bab Al-Mandab Strait and the Gulf of Aden, ending a period of relative calm started in January with the ceasefire in Gaza.
Trump had warned the Houthis that “hell will fall upon you” if they kept attacking commercial vessels and US war ships.
The Houthis have launched more than 100 attacks on ships since November 2023, saying they were in solidarity with the Palestinians about the Israel war with Hamas in Gaza.
During this period, the group sank two ships, seized another and killed at least four sailors in an offensive that interrupted global maritime transport, forcing companies to redirect for longer and faces around South Africa.
Trump also warned Iran, the main supporter of the Houthis, who needed to immediately stop supporting the group. He said that if Iran threatened the United States, “America will fully blame them and we will not be kind to it.”
