At the age of 9, the daughter of a member of the Backstreet Boys adopts a male name and receives support from her father

Backstreet Boys member AJ McLean told People magazine that her 9-year-old daughter decided to change her name from Ava to Elliott.

According to the singer, the decision is not related to transsexuality, as he would have initially imagined. “When my daughter asked to change her name to Elliott, I didn’t know if it was transgender related. But it is not. It’s her personal choice. It’s her body, her name, her everything,” declared AJ.

Then the singer told the magazine that he and his wife, Rochelle, will support their 9-year-old daughter in all her decisions.

“She chose the new name over a year ago. I remember saying to myself ‘Dad, I feel like my name is not so unique and original. There are lots of Avas in dance class and lots of Avas at school too,” he said. However, AJ assures her that she will always be Ava to him.

In August 2022, Rochelle reportedly posted on her social media about Ava’s name change. “Not that it’s anyone’s business, but Elliott’s name change is not gender related. She has wanted to change her name for a while now and Elliott took it,” AJ’s wife wrote.

AJ and Rochelle have been married since 2011 and are also parents to 6-year-old Lyric Dean McLean.
