At the damaged nuclear power plant in Fukushima on Sunday, the Prime Minister of Japan

The prime minister will visit the damaged nuclear power plant in Fukushima tomorrow Sunday JapanFumio Kishida, before his government makes a final decision on when to start dumping treated but still radioactive used water into the sea there.

The government is “in the final stages” of the decision-making processMr Kishida said on Friday in the US, according to Japanese state broadcaster NHK.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) released a report last month giving the go-ahead to dumping radioactive water into the sea by Japanese authorities, who say they are forced to do so because there is no longer room to store it in the installation.

But the decision is criticized by China and met with strong reaction from civil organizations both in Japan and South Korea.

The Japanese authorities assure that they have already removed or will remove most of the radioactive elements from these waterswith the exception of tritium, an isotope of hydrogen that is difficult to filter out.

Mr. Kisida made this announcement on the sidelines of the tripartite summit at Camp David in the US with South Korean President Yoon Sok-gil and US President Joe Biden.
