At the moment, there is no risk of canceling events in Rio, says Governor Castro

Governor Cláudio Castro (PL) said this Wednesday (1) that the end of year festivities in Rio de Janeiro are maintained.

Rio confirmed this Wednesday the first suspected case of the Ômicron variant. The patient is isolated and being observed by the Municipal Health Department. In Brazil, there are already three confirmed cases, all in São Paulo.

Although the decision is upheld, Cláudio Castro stressed that the state’s situation has been evaluated daily and that is why changes can happen.

“At this moment there is still no such risk. The secretariats have been working together. This is a daily analysis. In today’s radiography, you can’t talk about cancellation. If the secretariat says you can’t have it, you won’t have it. If you can have it, you will have it”, stated Castro.

According to the last survey carried out by CNN, in addition to Rio de Janeiro, five capitals confirmed the year-end festivities: São Paulo, Porto Alegre, Maceió, Natal and Manaus.

However, at least 15 municipalities and the Federal District have already informed that there will be no end-of-year party. Other cities are still studying alternatives. In Florianópolis, only fireworks will be displayed to avoid crowding. Porto Velho, Cuiabá, Boa Vista have not yet defined what will be done at the end of the year.

Cláudio Castro said that he met last Sunday (28) with the state health secretary, Alexandre Chieppe, to discuss the situation of Covid-19 in Rio. Castro also spoke about the concern with the economy if these events are not carried out.

“The decision will always be technical. It won’t be politics. We have to understand the importance these events have. It’s not a party. It’s income. These are important times of the year. We will not risk people’s lives,” he said.

Regarding the flu outbreak in the state, Castro confirmed that next week he will meet with the Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, to discuss the matter.

The statements were given during a late-morning agenda at the City of Police. Governor Cláudio Castro paid tribute to police officers from specialized police stations who participated in actions in the state to arrest militiamen. The Civil Police Task Force to combat militias, launched in October 2020, passed the 1,000 inmates mark.

Suspected case of omicron

The municipal health secretary confirmed the CNN that Fiocruz is investigating a suspected case of the variety in the country. The patient is a 29-year-old woman who arrived from South Africa on the 21st. The flight made stops in Johannesburg, Ethiopia, São Paulo, before arriving in Rio de Janeiro. Even without symptoms, she had a routine PCR test on the 29th, which was positive.
