Google has again abandoned its attempt to simplify the Internet for uninformed users, in one way or another hiding the “terrible” address bar of Chrome.
In 20218, Google tried to get rid of URL mapping entirely by showing only search terms in the address bar, but an impractical design forced developers to abandon the idea.
In 2020, the developers tried again to simplify the search bar and address, this time by hiding all parts of the web address except the domain name. While this approach has drew a fair amount of criticism from users, Google has defended its decision for a while, citing its intention to help people better identify malicious sites.
Apparently, now Google has reconsidered the situation, since they recently decided to close testing of this function, and did not finally implement it into the browser.
In a recent update to the Chromium bug tracker, a developer from Google reported that hiding the URL did not actually improve user security as expected, so they are going to close the experiment.
This change has already been implemented in Chrome 91, so users don’t need to do anything special to access the address bar. By default, now only the “https: //” slice is hidden. To display it, just right-click on the Chrome address bar and select “Always show URL in full.”
It looks like Google has succumbed to public opinion and finally listened to feedback without alienating power users.
