At the UN, Brazil says it is concerned about the effect of the war on the “most vulnerable”

During the resumption of the emergency session of the UN General Assembly this Wednesday (22), the Brazilian ambassador, João Genésio de Almeida Filho, said that Brazil is concerned about the effect of the Ukraine war “on the most vulnerable”. He also called on other countries to support both people on Ukrainian territory and refugees.

“Brazil is deeply concerned about the impact of the conflict on the most vulnerable, including the reports of difficulties in removing people with disabilities”, highlighted Almeida Filho.

“Regardless of the causes of a conflict, once it erupts, civilians must be spared, the wounded must receive medical care, humanitarian assistance must reach those in need, and detainees must be treated humanely under all circumstances,” he added. ambassador.

Genésio added that “the rules of war are not optional”.

During the speech, the need for an end to hostilities was again stressed and that conflict could have “a devastating impact” on food security and increase the risk of hunger around the world, especially in developing countries.

Still, the country also expressed concern about the “indiscriminate imposition of sanctions”, whose negative impacts could affect economies around the world that are still recovering from the pandemic. Thus, the “most vulnerable” would suffer from measures that are “mostly ineffective”.

“Civilians who wish to flee hostilities must be able to do so safely, and those who choose to stay must not become targets of attack. Likewise, the parties must grant safe passage to remittances of relief to the needy”, pointed out the ambassador.

Finally, Almeida Filho called for joint action for actions that have a “significant impact” and lead to lasting peace in Ukraine.
