At the UN, Queiroga defends the donation of vaccines against Covid-19 to other countries

The Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, spoke this Friday (25) at the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), in New York, in the United States.

At the meeting, Queiroga defended equal access to vaccines against Covid-19 by countries. “We have already donated more than 5.6 million doses in bilateral actions and through the Covax Facility. Throughout 2022, it is possible to increase this number, in line with the target set by the World Health Organization,” he said.

Heads of state and authorities from several countries gathered at UN Headquarters discuss how to increase the collective effort for universal vaccination.

Since the beginning of vaccination campaigns against Covid-19 around the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of the importance of equitable distribution of doses, as a strategy to face the pandemic at a global level.

According to Queiroga, the country has already immunized more than 160 million people with the first dose. About 70% of the population has a complete vaccination cycle and 25% received a booster dose, according to the minister.

In his speech, the minister also highlighted the strengthening of the health industrial complex in the country.

This week, Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz) delivered the first batch of vaccines against Covid-19 from AstraZeneca with 100% national manufacture, from the production of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (IFA) to packaging and distribution. The manufacturing was made possible from the signing of the technology transfer agreement signed between Fiocruz and AstraZeneca in 2021.
