Art must trump business in any debate about the future of cinema, said the American actress. Julianne Moore this Wednesday (31) when he took charge of the jury at the Venice Film Festival.
The 11-day event brings together filmmakers from around the world, giving invaluable exposure to small experimental production companies alongside some of the industry’s giants, including Netflix.
The 79th edition of the festival comes as traditional cinemas struggle to recover from the pandemic. Covid-19 raising questions about its financial viability.
“When we talk about the future of cinema, it often degrades into what is the future of business and that is not the future of art,” Moore told reporters.
“There will always be different delivery systems. How we live, how the world progresses, is constantly changing, but art does not change.”
Art houses are looking to Venice to provide a strong stream of new films that will help draw people out of their homes and back into theaters.
The Oscar winner said she hopes to see movies that make her heart beat faster during her time on Lido.
“I have no idea what to expect and having these 10 days to watch these 23 films in competition and not knowing every day what you’re going to see and what your reaction is going to be, it’s electrifying,” she said.
