At UN, China and Russia ignore US call to condemn North Korean satellite

China and Russia on Friday ignored a request by the United States for the UN Security Council to unite to condemn North Korea for its attempt to launch a satellite this week.

Instead, countries blamed Washington for raising tensions on the Korean peninsula.

Robert Wood, a diplomat for Washington’s mission to the UN, made the request at a Security Council meeting convened by the US and allies to discuss Wednesday’s launch (31), which the US considers to have violated several UN resolutions because it used technology. of ballistic missiles.

“We urge all board members to uphold the credibility of the board, join us in condemning this illegal behavior, and urge the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea not to go ahead with its stated plan to carry out another launch that will represent yet another threat to international peace and security,” Wood said.

After the launch, Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, said her country would soon put a military spy satellite into orbit and promised Pyongyang would increase its military surveillance capabilities.

Chinese Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Geng Shuang told the meeting that North Korea had “legitimate security concerns” and that the Security Council should promote cool-down and not point the finger at one side.

Geng and Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Anna Evstigneeva criticized the United States for raising tensions by holding joint military exercises with South Korea.
