At UN meeting, Brazil calls for troop withdrawal from Ukraine border

The UN Security Council – the most important body of the entity – met, on the night of Monday (22), in an emergency way to discuss the escalation of the crisis in Ukraine.

Since January 2022, Brazil has held a seat as one of the countries elected to rotating positions on the Council.

In a speech lasting about 3.5 minutes, ambassador Ronaldo Costa Filho said that Brazil follows the latest news involving Ukraine with “extreme concern”.

This Monday (21), Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized the independence of two areas in eastern Ukraine, and decreed the deployment of the Russian army to the region.

Costa Filho called for the withdrawal of troops and military equipment that are on the borders between the countries.

“An inevitable first objective is an immediate ceasefire, with a comprehensive withdrawal of troops and military equipment on the ground,” he said.

In addition, he reinforced an appeal for the parties involved in the crisis to continue dialoguing with “a spirit of openness, understanding, flexibility and a sense of urgency for peace”.

“This military demobilization will be an important step towards building trust between the parties, strengthening diplomacy and seeking a sustainable solution to the crisis”, declared Brazil’s permanent representative to the United Nations.

“We firmly believe that this Council must fulfill its core responsibility to help the parties engage in meaningful and effective dialogue to achieve a solution that effectively addresses security concerns in the region. Make no mistake. At the end of the day, we are talking about the lives of innocent men, women and children on the ground.”
