At UN, Russia says resolution on breakaway republics ‘will not dissolve’

Russian Ambassador to the United Nations (UN), Vasily Nebenzya, said during the General Assembly this Wednesday (23), that President Vladimir Putin’s resolution on recognizing the independence of two separatist regions in Ukraine does not will dissolve and that will protect these two areas.

“We must think about human lives and the fate of the people of Donetsk and Luhansk. Our resolution around the two republics will not be interrupted, we will guard and protect,” she said, adding that Russia will not remain “indifferent to the plight of the people in Donbas”.

Nebenzya also accused Ukraine and the international community of not cooperating with the dialogues in the region and with the Minsk accords.

“In any crisis situation, UN members call for full dialogue between members of a conflict, and if that doesn’t happen it cannot be resolved,” he said.

The ambassador also said that there is a “linguistic inquisition” in the regions and that those who do not agree with Kiev’s policy end up being persecuted and that the ceasefire will be monitored by Russian forces if necessary.

“All these years we had embargoes on transport and food to the Donbas region [onde estão as regiões de Luhansk e Donetsk]. The number of refugees rescued and who had to go to Russia has reached the tens of thousands, 96 thousand people to date,” he added.

During the speech, Nebenzya also stated that there is no previous or current conflict to justify accusations that the situation in Eastern Ukraine does not comply with the UN Charter.

After months of military escalation and intemperance on the Ukrainian border, Russia is increasing pressure on its former Soviet neighbor, threatening to destabilize Europe and involve the United States.

Russia has been tightening its military grip around Ukraine for the past year, amassing tens of thousands of troops, equipment and artillery at the country’s gates. The mobilization prompted warnings from US intelligence officials that a Russian invasion could be imminent.

In recent weeks, diplomatic efforts to defuse tensions have not come to a conclusion. The independence of Donetsk and Luhansk, two Ukrainian separatist areas, was recognized by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday (21).

The escalation in the years-long conflict between Russia and Ukraine has set off the continent’s biggest security crisis since the Cold War, raising the specter of a dangerous confrontation between Western powers and Moscow.
