Athena Bitcoin Global, the largest crypto ATM company, has accused former CTO Sean Overton of sabotaging business relations with the El Salvadorian government.
Athena Bitcoin Global is suing former CTO Shaun Overton, who previously served as president of software development company ROI Developers. Overton was named CTO of Athena Bitcoin following the takeover by ROI Developers. Last June, Athena Bitcoin signed a contract with the El Salvadoran government to supply and install 1,500 ATMs across the country.
However, according to Athena Bitcoin, Overton hired unqualified personnel and violated confidentiality agreements by exposing flaws in the Athena ATM software to the El Salvadorian government. In addition, Overton refused to finalize the software without concluding an additional contract and allegedly sent an email to a colleague in which he announced his refusal to work with the “Indians”.
As a result, Overton’s actions prompted the El Salvadorian government to reduce the volume of purchases of cryptomats, which caused financial and reputational damage to Athena Bitcoin. Recall that initially the company planned to place several dozen cryptomats to determine the business model, and then open its own office in El Salvador. The amount of funds allocated for the installation of cryptomats in the country amounted to more than $1 million.
Earlier this month, it was revealed that the El Salvadoran government had engaged cryptocurrency software company AlphaPoint to develop and solve the problems of the Chivo government wallet. The CEO of AlphaPoint said that the company applied for the infrastructure and software for the Chivo wallet even before the project was launched, but the El Salvadoran authorities chose Athena Bitcoin.
